Autonomous wet labs for AI biology

Substrate is building a network of fully autonomous wet labs — cloud-based data production facilities for AI biology, integrated with foundation models. The framing of a lab as a data production facility is the substantive one: progress in AI biology is limited less by modelling than by the rate at which experimental data can be generated, and human-run labs do not scale with compute. The company makes hiring decisions on merit, scope-fit and the working relationship it expects to build.
