Portable nuclear microreactors
radiantnuclear.com (opens in a new tab)Radiant Industries builds portable nuclear microreactors, designed to be mass-produced in a factory rather than constructed on site. Its first reactor, Kaleidos, generates one megawatt, is fail-safe, can be transported to wherever power is needed and runs up to five years without refuelling. The target is work currently done by diesel generators of similar size: backup and primary power for hospitals, data centres, remote sites and military bases. The approach leans on modern software engineering and existing well-qualified materials to shorten development. Founded in 2020 and based in El Segundo, California, it is testing its first reactor at Idaho National Laboratory ahead of customer deliveries in 2028.
